For ten years of the most creative period in his life (1875-1885), Nikolai Dmitrievich lived in Paris. Unfortunately, most of what he produced was sold to anonymous buyers, and it has been lost to subsequent generations. This was a great loss to art history. Although he prepared for a career as a military officer, art connoisseurs convinced his parents that he had the talent to enter the Academy of Fine Arts, he became a student of the famous Russian artist Fyodor Bruni. At first, Nikolai Dmitrievich received numerous medals and awards for his figures nature and his picturesque études.
Duccio di Buoninsegna - 24 Duccio di Buoninsegna
Duccio di Buoninsegna (c. 1255-1260 – c. 1318-1319) was one of the most influential Italian artists of his time. Born in Siena, Tuscany, he worked mostly with pigment and egg tempera and like most of his contemporaries he painted religious subject matters. He has influenced Simone Martini and the brothers Ambrogio and Pietro Lorenzetti, among others. The Madonna, painted on a wooden panel around the year 1300, was purchased in November 2004 by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City for an estimated sum of 45 million USD, the most expensive purchase ever by the museum. In 2006 James Beck, a scholar at Columbia University, stated that he believes the painting is a nineteenth century forgery; the Metropolitan Museum\'s curator of European Paintings has disputed Beck\'s assertion.

Duchamp, Marcel - 4 Duchamp, Marcel
Marcel Duchamp (28 July 1887 – 2 October 1968) was a French artist whose work is most often associated with the Dadaist and Surrealist movements. Considered by some to be one of the most important artists of the 20th century, Duchamp\'s output influenced the development of post-World War I Western art. He advised modern art collectors, such as Peggy Guggenheim and other prominent figures, thereby helping to shape the tastes of Western art during this period. Duchamp challenged conventional thought about artistic processes and art marketing, not so much by writing, but through subversive actions such as dubbing a urinal art and naming it Fountain. He produced relatively few artworks, while moving quickly through the avant-garde circles of his time.
