The earliest works of VM Vasnetsov were written in the vein of genre painting Peredvizhniki. However, since the painting «After Igor Svyatoslavich's fighting with the Polovtsy», the artist strongly rises on a new path.
The basis of the plot was an episode from the epic poem «The Tale of Igor's Campaign».The Tale of Igor's Campaign (Old East Slavic: Ñëîâî î ïëúêó Èãîðåâѣ, Slovo o plŭku Igorevě; Ukrainian: Ñëîâî î ïîëêó ²ãîðåâ³ì, Slovo o polku Ihorevim; Modern Russian: Ñëîâî î ïîëêó Èãîðåâå, Slovo o polku Igoreve) is an anonymous epic poem written in the Old East Slavic language and tentatively dated to the end of 12th century.
It is also occasionally translated as The Song of Igor's Campaign, The Lay of Igor's Campaign, and The Lay of the Host of Igor. The Russian sources transliterate the name as Ihor. On the canvas appears battlefield following a clash with Russian troops Polovets. Vasnetsov was able to borrow not only the story but also the enlightened spirit of the ancient poem. Flagging of grass and flowers cover hazy shroud the bloody moon, a fight over a dead eagles field creates a lyrical image of the Russian land, political blood of their defenders.
Polovtsy, Cumans (Byzantine: Kuman or Cuman (Κouμav), Hungarian: kun / plural kunok, Turkic: kuman / plural kumanlar) were a nomadic Turkic people who inhabited a shifting area north of the Black Sea known as Cumania along the Volga River. They eventually settled to the west of the Black Sea, influencing the politics of Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Moldavia, and Wallachia. Cuman is an exonym for the western Kipchak tribes living in Central Europe and the Balkans.
"The Cumans were nomadic warriors of the Eurasian steppe who exerted an enduring impact on the medieval Balkans. The basic instrument of Cuman political success was military force, which none of the warring Balkan factions could resist. As a consequence, groups of the Cumans settled and mingled with the local population in various regions of the Balkans. The Cumans were the founders of three successive Bulgarian dynasties (Asenids, Terterids, and Shishmanids), and the Wallachian dynasty (Basarabids)." They also played an active role in Byzantium, Hungary, and Serbia, with Cuman immigrants being integrated into each country's elite.
"The people known in Turkic as Kipchaks were the same as the Polovtsy of the Russians, the Komanoi of the Byzantines, the Qumani (Cumans) of the Arab geographer Muhammad al-Idrisi, and the Kun (Qoun) of the Hungarians. According to Gadrisi, they originally formed part of the group of Kimak Turks who lived in Siberia along the middle reaches of the Irtysh, or along the Ob. The Kimaks and the Oghuz were closely related."
There is information that Polovci is actually Aryan army, the Great Tartar (Slavonic state in Siberia), which existed until Yermak trip to Siberia, and possibly up to 18 century. And hike Polovtsy, yavyalsya actually acts of war against the "rebel" province of a great Slavic state. That is the modern digs, the remaining mail from the field of battle, as well as indirect data - a very dense dynastic connection.
No battle was raging imagination of an artist, not the noise of battle, and the mournful wailing of heroes, full of beautiful imagery, shrill sense of compassion and pride. This, he wrote one of his best paintings "After Igor Svyatoslavich's fighting with the Polovtsy". This work is full of poetic melancholy, is the soul of Russian people.
Among the field of flowers is based on two Russian Knights in beautiful clothes. A prince with courage and calm, his eyes open, as if looking at the viewer and ask for something ... Zlatokudry young knyazhich, an arrow pierced in the heart, as if asleep. "ped pearl brave soul from the body ..."
Painter, enthusiastic antiquity, especially clearly stated armor and clothing. Their colors - green, blue, yellow, red - to become a field of flowers, and melodious, like nature, hailed the "Word" and in the picture. A bend in Polovci positions retentionist dying flour: the land is not taken posyagnuvshih on her freedom. Slowly move the artist to view the immense field, as if inviting the audience and look, vdumatsya in the truth of history and beauty of poetry.
As folklore poetics, a clear picture of the characters are divided into positive and negative. Young Prince Rostislav stood as in a dream, with an arrow in the heart. Mature man lying with his hands raskinutymi - Prince Izyaslav, if he collects his heroic force derives from its native land. Vasnetsov stresses elegance of their clothes, attractive people, beauty and freedom Pos. Instead, the enemies-Polovci shown in curved positions.
The film caused a lot of responses, most of which were negative. Few contemporaries Vasnetsov, and especially IE Repin, supported the new aspirations of the artist. He wrote criticism VV Stasov: «This is incredibly wonderful, new, and deeply poetic thing, these have not happened in a Russian school».
