Title: The Dead Christ
Description:

Francesco da Cotignola, called Zaganelli (c. 1475 - 1532)
The Dead Christ with Angels
Oil on wood,  1514
98.1 x 202.5 cm
National Gallery, London, UK

Christ, wearing the crown of thorns and displaying the wound inflicted on his side during the Crucifixion, is supported by two angels upon a tomb.

The Dead Christ with Angels is a lunette from an altarpiece, and would originally have been placed above the central panel, Zaganelli The Baptism of Christ. Both panels are recorded (see below), as having come from the Laderchi chapel in S. Domenico, Faenza, and they were probably painted for this site.

Removed from the Laderchi chapel in S. Domenico, Faenza when the chapel was being restored at the end of the eighteenth century; in Rome by 1847; the Erskine family collection, Linlathen, Forfarshire; bought, 1924.
