Description:

Francesco da Cotignola, called Zaganelli (c. 1475 - 1532)
The Baptism of Christ
Oil on wood,  1514
200.7 x 190.5 cm
National Gallery, London, UK

Inscribed on the angel's scroll: ·HIC·/ ·EST· FILIVS·/ MEVS DILECTVS· (This is my son in whom I am well pleased); on the Baptist's scroll: ·ECCE·/AGNVS·/ ·DEI· (Behold the lamb of God). Signed and dated on the cartellino, lower left: ·xhs· ·1514· /fracischus choti/gnolensis· ·f· (Francesco of Contignola made this).

Saint John, at the right, baptises Christ in the river Jordan. New Testament (all Gospels, e.g. Matthew 3: 1317). A dove above Christ signifies the Holy Ghost. A child angel holds a towel to dry Christ. The women at the left may be intended as the Virgin and Saint Anne or Saint Elizabeth, although they are not usually depicted in a representation of the Baptism.

The Baptism of Christ is the central part of an altarpiece, of which The Dead Christ with Angels also formed a part. Both panels are recorded (see below), as having come from the Laderchi chapel in S. Domenico, Faenza, and they were probably painted for this site.

Removed from the Laderchi chapel in S. Domenico, Faenza, when the chapel was being restored at the end of the eighteenth century; in Rome by 1847; the Erskine family collection, Linlathen, Forfarshire; bought, 1924.
