The Savvino Storozhevsky Monastery was founded in 1398 near Zvenigorod by the prince Yuri Dmitriyevich, the son of Dmitry Donskoy, and by Sabba, Father-Superior of the Trinity Sergius Monastery, follower of St. Sergius of Radonezh. The architectural ensemble of the monastery is preserved up to our time and consists of the Cathedral of the St. Virgin’s Nativity (1405–1407), the hipped Trinity Church (1654), the refectory with the one-headed Transfiguration Church (1693), the bell tower, the Palace of the Tsar (1650–1654), the chambers of the Empress. The Monastery is the monument to the early Moscow architecture. Important periods of Russian history are connected with its name: reforms of Patriarch Nicon, the schism of the church, the struggle for the power between Peter I and Tsarevna Sofia, the War of liberation of 1812.
