Lack of material resources did not allow a child a future professor of the Academy of Arts Nikolai Andreyevich Koshelev reach the picturesque school of Academician A.V. Stupina, which was opened in the city of Arzamas. Instead, eleven, which wanted to paint the boy was given into the service initially to a single artist, then to another - both cases were unsuccessful apprenticeship. I would be at the Nizhny Novgorod on the land of one artist-craftsman more, nor accept participation in the fate of Nikolai Koshelev, a local landowner. Three years the youth lived in her family, and three years has worked tirelessly, almost independently mastering the subtleties of painting techniques. After a trip to the benefactress of the Kazan Art School, budding young Koshelev received a few lessons of painting professional teacher. This was followed by independent work on the painting of the iconostasis of the church and the walls of the monastery and, finally, a trip to St. Petersburg and admission to the Academy of Fine Arts (1861).
The first years of teaching Koshelev easy in poverty, and stayed for weeks in a starvation state. And despite this, a thirst for creativity made him go forward - for the 1862 student Koshelev won three silver medals. And in 1863 it was purchased a few of his works, which finally improved the financial position of the artist.
Since 1865 NA Koshelev for several years working on the paintings in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow. It is for this work he became an academician (1873) and professor (1878) Academy of Art. His life and works (as painted by the artist owned and remarkable portraits, landscapes and genre paintings) NA Koshelev if proved, that in painting there is no broad high road, and only he could reach her shiny tops, who, unafraid of fatigue creeping in its rocky trails (we have allowed ourselves to the replacement of only one word to repeat the famous words of Karl Marx - they are organically applicable to the fate of national artist).
