Pygmalion and the Image - Study for Pygmalion and Galatea at the Altar of Hymen
Pencil on tracing paper, 1867
119 mm x 87 mm
Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery, Birmingham, United Kingdom

A drawing for a series of four paintings based on an episode William Morris' cycle of epic poems, 'The Earthly Paradise'. The first series is currently in the collection of Lord Lloyd-Webber, the second is in Birmingham's collection.

This study is also known as 'The Altar of Hymen', in Morris's verse from 'The Earthly Paradise' this scene is not recounted explicitly, but rather hinted at through Galatea's own words. It shows the marriage of Pygmalion and Galatea.

The outline figures of Pygmalion and Galatea are identical in composition to those in 1927P630, but those of Venus and Cupid are only loosely suggested, and have been somewhat ed in the final design. The background is also omitted in this study.
