Saint Jerome in his Study
about 1475
Oil (identified) on lime

Saint Jerome (about 342420), who translated the Bible into Latin from the original Greek and Hebrew, is shown reading in his study. He is surrounded by books, an inkwell and a crucifix. Jerome's traditional attribute of a lion (from whose paw, according to legend, the saint had removed a thorn) is seen in the shadows on the right, and there are also a cat, a peacock (often a symbol of immortality) and a partridge (perhaps an allusion to the truth of Christ).

Saint Jerome in his Study is now accepted as the work of Antonello da Messina, and generally dated about 1475. Even in the early sixteenth century the attribution of this picture was disputed some considering it to be partly by Jacometto and others regarding it as Netherlandish.

Saint Jerome in his Study is an extraordinary imitation of a Netherlandish style and subject by an Italian artist of the fifteenth century. To a sophisticated pattern of linear perspective the artist has added the depiction of light entering the room from in front (where we stand) and behind.

Collection of Antonio Pasqualino, Venice, by 1529; collection of Thomas Baring by 1835; bought by William Coningham, 1848; bought from the Earl of Northbrook, 1894.
