Portrait of Alexei Romanovich Tomilov (1779-1848), collector and art-lover This pleasantly serious portrait by the twenty-six-year-old Orest Kiprensky is reminiscent of the portraiture of the French Romantic painter, Pierre-Paul Prud'hon (1758-1823) in its refined, understated elegance and focus on the well-lit face.
Prior to the beginning of the XIX century artillery officer Alexei Romanovich Tomilov was known primarily for its military achievements. In 1799 he commanded the work to strengthen in Kronstadt. In 1808 Tomilov retired, but the first days of the war of 1812 Tomilov took an active part in the formation in the Novaya county people's militia and the two worked in the Provincial Committee of the People's militia in St. Petersburg. By this time he had already started to collect modern Russian art to him, friends with many artists, and in particular with OA Kiprensky, who wrote two well-known portrait Tomilova in 1808 and 1813 years. The main meaning of their lives Alexei Romanovich considered ministry arts. Long time, he was a full member of the Imperial Academy Hudzhestv, participated in the foundation of the Society for the Encouragement of Artists.
